About the Author :- 

                             Germaine Greer was born in Australia in 1939. She was educated there itself. She became a famous feminist writer. She focussed on social and cultural life of women. Her Famous works are – The Female Eunuch, Sex and Destinity, The Change etc.

 

Summary:- 

                 ‘A child is Born’ is an essay which has been written by Germaine Greer. This essay is about the birth of a child. In this essay, the writer focussed on a child. She says how a child is born, how does it get maturity and how does it become father or mother and does the same activity after being matured. 

The writer says, the birth of child gives happiness to the people of the society. Either it is a male child or a female child. All the members of family are happy after birth. They wait for it for a long time. They do all activities according to their own tradition and custom. A child becomes a father or a mother. But it gets the love and affection of many persons. For example, a girl becomes matured and goes to her father-in-law’s house and begins to live with her husband, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law etc. But she is always ready to go to her own parents’ house before giving the birth of her own child. She thinks that she can get much love there. After giving birth, the child is taken under proper care. The naming ceremony is lovely. On that day, the child and the mother wear new clothes and different activities are done according to their custom. There is a feasting and singing till the late night. Many persons gather and give blessing to both of them. After that, it is also considered as a member of family. The writer says that the western method of giving birth to the child very expensive and it has no much affection towards the child because the people of western are very busy. They want to earn much, live freely and do not care for common things. The tradition and customs of celebrating the birth ceremony in every state is different. But all faith in it and all are happy. This is the tradition. After that, the child becomes matured and it does so. It follows the tradition.
