                          Manohar Malgaonkar was born in 1913. He is a well – known novelist and short story writer with over 25 publications. His important works are – Distant Drum, The Princess, A Bend in the Ganges and Bombay Beware. A Pinch of Snuff has been taken from contemporary Indian short stories in English that is full of wit and adventure.

 

 Summary 

                  “ A Pinch of Snuff’” is a short story, written by Manohar Malgaonkar. It is really a very interesting story. One day the narrator’s mother tells him about Nanukaka’s coming. He has to meet the minister. The narrator dislikes guesting but his mother assures him that he be coming and will stay two-three days. He goes to station unwillingly. He is on leave for two days. When he reaches the station, he is surprised to see Nanukaka. He looks like a Zamindar. In the meanwhile Nanukaka takes a pinch of snuff, then he goes to north block with him to see the minister. Nanukaka does not succeed in meeting. He returns after two hours but he uses bad words in his mother – tongue. He wants to meet Sohanlal Ratiram, the welfare minister and other VIPs. He managed a unique car by the help of a Dhobi. He changes the dress of the narrator. He makes him driver. He goes with him and uses his wit. He writes on the visitors register that he has been the hereditary pandit of the Ninnore Palace. He tells that he has to attend the meeting of zamindars and he knows many VIPs. He tells lies and attracts Sohanlal. At last, he comes out and meets him. He tells his problem but Nanukaka assures him to help. He talks with him for a long time. He tells lies to make the situation in favour of him. But the narrator is worried. He thinks what will happen when the minister knows the fact. He hopes that his uncle can make the thing right at that time also. So we can say that really it is very interesting story.

 मनोहर मालगांवकर का जन्म 1913 में हुआ था। वह 25 से अधिक प्रकाशनों के साथ एक प्रसिद्ध उपन्यासकार और लघु कथाकार हैं। उनकी महत्वपूर्ण कृतियाँ हैं - डिस्टेंट ड्रम, द प्रिंसेस, ए बेंड इन द गैंगेज और बॉम्बे बिवेयर। ए पिंच ऑफ स्नफ़ अंग्रेजी की समकालीन भारतीय लघु कथाओं से लिया गया है जो बुद्धि और रोमांच से भरपूर है।

 

 सारांश :-

                  "ए पिंच ऑफ स्नफ'' मनोहर मालगांवकर द्वारा लिखित एक लघु कहानी है। यह वाकई बहुत दिलचस्प कहानी है. एक दिन वर्णनकर्ता की माँ उसे नानुकाका के आने के बारे में बताती है। उन्हें मंत्री से मिलना है. वर्णनकर्ता को मेहमाननवाज़ी पसंद नहीं है लेकिन उसकी माँ ने उसे आश्वासन दिया कि वह आ रहा है और दो-तीन दिन रुकेगा। वह अनिच्छा से स्टेशन जाता है। वह दो दिन की छुट्टी पर हैं. जब वह स्टेशन पहुंचता है, तो नानुकाका को देखकर आश्चर्यचकित हो जाता है। वह जमींदार जैसा दिखता है. इसी बीच नानूकाका एक चुटकी नसवार लेते हैं और फिर उनके साथ मंत्री से मिलने नॉर्थ ब्लॉक चले जाते हैं. नानूकाका मुलाकात में सफल नहीं हो पाते. वह दो घंटे बाद लौटता है लेकिन अपनी मातृभाषा में बुरे शब्दों का प्रयोग करता है। वह कल्याण मंत्री सोहनलाल रतिराम और अन्य वीआईपी से मिलना चाहते हैं। उन्होंने एक धोबी की मदद से एक अनोखी कार बनाई। वह कथावाचक की पोशाक बदल देता है। वह उसे ड्राइवर बना देता है. वह उसके साथ जाता है और अपनी बुद्धि का प्रयोग करता है। उन्होंने आगंतुक रजिस्टर पर लिखा है कि वह निन्नोर पैलेस के वंशानुगत पंडित रहे हैं। वह बताता है कि उसे जमींदारों की बैठक में शामिल होना है और वह कई वीआईपी लोगों को जानता है। वह झूठ बोलता है और सोहनलाल को आकर्षित करता है। आख़िरकार वह बाहर आता है और उससे मिलता है। वह अपनी समस्या बताता है लेकिन नानूकाका उसे मदद करने का आश्वासन देता है। वह उससे काफी देर तक बातें करता है. वह स्थिति को अपने पक्ष में करने के लिए झूठ बोलता है। लेकिन कथावाचक चिंतित है. वह सोचता है कि जब मंत्री को हकीकत पता चलेगी तो क्या होगा। उसे उम्मीद है कि उसके चाचा उस समय भी सब कुछ ठीक कर सकते हैं। तो हम कह सकते हैं कि वाकई ये बेहद दिलचस्प कहानी है.
