उनकी पुस्तकें - लीव्स ऑफ ग्रास (1855) ड्रम टैप (1866)
वे थे- अमेरिका के सर्वाधिक व्यक्तिवादी साहित्यकार।
उन्होंने अपने 12वें जन्मदिन से पहले बढ़ई के रूप में काम करना शुरू किया।
अमेरिका में गृह युद्ध -1881 में लड़ा गया था
