Theme of the chapter:-
- This is an essay where Mahatma Gandhi has compared Indian civilization to the western civilization.And eventually he has suggested we Indians to shun it at all cost.

- The civilization that India has evolved is not to be beaten in the world.
- India remains immovable and that is her glory.
- Civilization is that mode of conduct which points out to mant he path of duty.
- The Gujarati equivalent for civilization means ‘good conduct’.
- The mind is a restless bird; the more it gets the more itw ants, and still remains unsatisfied.
- It was not that we did not know how to invent machinery, but our forefathers knew that, if we set our hearts after such things, we would become slaves.
- Our ancestors were satisfied with small villages. They enjoyed true Home Rule.
- The tendency of the Indian civilization is to elevate the moral being, that of the Western civilization is to propagate immorality.

- यह एक निबंध है जहां महात्मा गांधी ने भारतीय सभ्यता की तुलना पश्चिमी सभ्यता से की है और अंततः उन्होंने हम भारतीयों को हर कीमत पर इससे दूर रहने का सुझाव दिया है।
महत्वपूर्ण लेख:-
- भारत ने जो सभ्यता विकसित की है, उसे दुनिया में हराया नहीं जा सकता।
- भारत अचल है और यही उसका गौरव है।
- सभ्यता आचरण की वह पद्धति है जो कर्तव्य पथ की ओर संकेत करती है।
- सभ्यता के लिए गुजराती पर्याय का अर्थ है 'अच्छा आचरण'।
- मन एक बेचैन पक्षी है; जितना अधिक उसे मिलता है उतनी ही अधिक चींटियाँ निकलती है, और फिर भी वह असंतुष्ट रहता है।
- ऐसा नहीं था कि हम मशीनरी का आविष्कार करना नहीं जानते थे, लेकिन हमारे पूर्वज जानते थे कि, अगर हम ऐसी चीज़ों में अपना दिल लगाएँगे, तो हम गुलाम बन जाएँगे।
- हमारे पूर्वज छोटे-छोटे गाँवों से संतुष्ट थे। उन्होंने सच्चे होम रूल का आनंद लिया।
- भारतीय सभ्यता की प्रवृत्ति नैतिक सत्ता को ऊपर उठाने की है, पश्चिमी सभ्यता की प्रवृत्ति अनैतिकता का प्रचार करने की है।
- भारतीयों को भारतीय सभ्यता से उसी प्रकार चिपकना चाहिए जैसे बच्चा माँ की छाती से चिपका रहता है।
- गांधीजी ने इससे एक सबक सीखा और वह यह कि हमें इसे हर कीमत पर त्यागना चाहिए।
- भारतीय सभ्यता नैतिकता की पूजा करती है जबकि पश्चिमी सभ्यता भौतिकता की पूजा करती है।
- आधुनिक सभ्यता की विशिष्ट विशेषता मानवीय आवश्यकताओं की अनिश्चित बहुलता है।
- अटारी सभ्यता ग्रीस की है।
- हमारी सभ्यता, हमारी संस्कृति, हमारा स्वराज हमारी इच्छाओं-स्व-भोग को बढ़ाने पर नहीं, बल्कि इच्छाओं-आत्म-अस्वीकार को सीमित करने पर निर्भर करता है।
- यदि हमने पश्चिमी सभ्यता की नकल करने का प्रयास किया तो यह भारत को बर्बाद कर देगी।
- गोल्डन फ़्लीस-खोजना बहुत कठिन चीज़ है।
- हमें अपना जीवन पश्चिमी दार्शनिक के आदर्श वाक्य सादा जीवन और उच्च विचार पर व्यतीत करना चाहिए।
